WUNY wants to give you the heads up about PETER CINCOTTI - a young, versatile musical prodigy - professionally performing, composing, and arranging by the tender age of 23. Cincotti's career is continually blossoming, garnering audience members from all walks of life for putting an ever-original twist on the work of the everyday singer-songwriter.
On the heels of his other forays such as acting in the Kevin Spacey-starred film Beyond The Sea and modeling for designer Ermenegildo Zegna alongside actor Diego Luna, The New York Times has declared Peter "one of the most promising of singer-pianists of the next generation" - drawing rich inspiration from pop, rock, blues, funk, and jazz. Peter has since been on tour thrilling audiences around the world, selling out prominent venues in LA, London, and Paris.
Now is YOUR opportunity to catch the budding songwriter sensation at your very fingertips through an intimate upcoming gig at The Box. Cincotti's forthcoming LP of entirely original material has yet to be released, but now more than ever is the perfect time to embrace this new musical dynamo.

Sad to report that both Handsome Furs shows at Mercury Lounge for May 23 and 24 are cancelled due to visa problems! The duo comprised of Sunset Rubdown's Dan Boeckner and fiancee Alexei Perry just released an album on Sub Pop, catching much critical acclaim for its "somewhat hopeful... melancholy keys, lonely electric guitar, and emotionally detached percussion." Refunds are available at points of purchase.

A Note from 420 (yesterday) The Daffodil Named The Official Flower Of The City Of New York
Once humble wildflowers, mostly native to the Mediterranean, daffodils were first noticed in the 1570s by botanist Carolus Clusius. He founded the Dutch bulb industry, which led to the hybridization of daffodils in thousands of colors from golden yellows and whites to bright oranges and even pinks. Daffodils arrived in New Amsterdam with Dutch settlers and are now a part of New York City’s horticultural fabric.

Hey Everyone,
There were some great stuff happening yesterday in case you missed it. My day started at the Indie Night School put together by Tom from The Black Spoons at Webster Hall. This is a must for anyone who wants to get into the music business, so I highly recommend you check it out next time. After that, I headed over to Fat Baby to check out The Fatales, Saints and Lovers, and Taxpayer. The bands put on a good show and I had a great time. They will be playing out again soon and I will keep you posted on that. Also, we have several contests coming up with these bands so, check out their sites.

You may be wondering what the Brooklyn Ski Club is and how do I join, right? Well, fellow What's Up NYC member, Matt, has started his own personal blog known as Brooklyn Ski Club.
Like What's Up it lists events, but usually only one or two, and offers a review and pictures the next day. Along with this, BSC features music (reviews, news, MP3's), Brooklyn/NYC commentary, and random bits of information.
Take a look at Brooklyn Ski Club. Also, catch him on My Open Bar as a contributing writer.

Ok, so did anyone warn you that the L train would stop running at midnight on January 6th? Well, no one told me and the MTA didn’t bother hanging up any signs (actually they did put them up AFTER 12 which was a great help, thanks a lot MTA!).
Last night, I ended up going out to a place in the East Village with a friend and after we headed over to a few spots in Williamsburg. Well, I didn't bother to make sure that the subways were working, because last time I checked they were running. I went on my merry way to South Billyburg to have a good time, but it's not how it turned out. You see, I live in Manhattan so I was stuck when I found out that the L wasn’t working, but luckily, my friend (thank you Aidan) let me stay at her place. Just when I thought my night (or shall I say early morning) was over, I got a call from a friend who I haven’t seen in a while. I ended up hopping on the J (which was running, yay!) and was back in the L.E.S. Here's my other problem, I live on the west side and so does he, but he was on a bike and I was on foot. I wasn’t going to take the subway again and decided to walk across town. He didn't leave me alone in the cold and cuddled together we walked and walked and walked...
I guess my night wasn't so bad. Yeah, I was pissed off because of the L train, still I had a good time. Got to hang out with Aidan (finally) and got to spent time with an old friend.

This sums up what I think about the MTA. (thanks for the pic, Matt)

Now that the holiday season is over and you're back to living your life, take some time to check that you are not missing any body parts or anything else that's of importance to you. If you are, don't stress because most likely the NYC Transit has it safely locked up in their lost and found storage.
It turns out that the NYC Transit recieves over 8,200 items per year, of which includes prosthetic legs, cell phones, wrapped Christmas gifts, and anything in between. Your belongings are left in the Lost Property Office at the 34th St and 8th Ave station and you are allowed 6 months and 15 days to claim the items. If you don't they are auctioned off. I suggest that you quickly head over to the office and collect your stuff before you are forced to bid for it.
Wednesday January 04, 2006
As you adjust to living in the '06, there are several changes that you need to know about.
-First of all, NY State's minimum wage is going up to $6.75 per hour. That extra cash will come in handy since the cost of mailing a letter is going up to $.39 as of January 8th.
-Next, all you graffiti artists under 21 will no longer be allowed to own spray paint, permanent, broad tip markers, and etching instruments. Now you're going to have to find alternative ways to publically display your art.
-Most importantly, Mister Softee will only play his annoying tune ONLY when he is driving. Fortunately, he is no longer play his jingle when he stops next to your house.
-And last but not least, you can no longer walk into a field, rink, or court and attack the players. The law says that viewers can't "place, drop, toss, or hurl, an oject, substance, or dangerous instrument" at athletes. Don't worry, there is still no rule against yelling or using profane language.
