This morning (9:30am) Kings and Queens Go Forth gathers parade royalty to strut their colors before meeting their bands, while a Dimanche Gras program (7pm) caps off the weekend with a pageant to choose this year's official King and Queen and showcases vintage calypsonians, steel drummers, and stilt dancers.

Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk is a self-guided tour of open artist studios and area exhibitions, a range of public art projects, special events, and extensive local merchant participation. The tour provides a relaxed setting for dialogue, collecting, and for artists to discuss current bodies of work, while offering a glimpse into the creation process.
A baby of the North and a college girl of the South, I still lack the acquired taste for barbecue that so many of my UGA co-eds have come to endorse. To all you New Yorkers who don't (or maybe do) know what you're missing, the BBQ is coming to YOU this weekend.

Last week hosted the Hip Hop Film Festival and this week, the hip hop hardly stops. The genre's birthplace starts a celebration for the ages this weekend with the Third Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Films, parties, panels, and exhibitions all begin tonight and end Saturday with an all day show headlined by Ghostface. The best news - as far as we can tell, everything is free! All it takes is a quick online registration with Brooklyn Bodega.

The fest kicks off tonight with a party celebrating the 50 year legacy and recent relaunching of Stax Records. Stax was home to legendary acts such as Otis Redding, Booker T. and the MG’s, The Bar-Kays, Isaac Hayes, The Dramatics, The Staple Singers, The Emotions and apparently a ton of others. Drinks are complementary care of Brooklyn Brewery and music will be provided by Large Professor, The Bridge, and Video Music Box host Ralph McDaniels.

Tonight starts the Brooklyn International Film Festival! This year's festival comes with a beautifully poignant mission statement:
"The 10th Brooklyn International Film Festival (BiFF) has been titled IDENTITY. Since 1998, we have been searching for our own identity and for filmmakers with unique traits. On the 10th anniversary, BiFF turns inquisitive in the search for a refined identity and a new balance. BiFF 07 is about revelations. It’s about uncovering the truth that lies beneath. It is about revisiting and coming out of the shelf to leave a mark. It’s about being transparent in an opaque system. Ultimately, BiFF 07 is about individuality, personality, distinctiveness, uniqueness, and the courage to be oneself."
Our film pick is Slippery Slope by Sarah Schenck. A film professor at Hunter College and film advisor at The New School, she is presenting this film - her first feature as a writer/director - and is participating in a Q&A with the cast in crew following each screening! Here's the synopsis: "In the comedy Slippery Slope, a fierce young feminist filmmaker who is desperate for cash to finish her documentary Feminism for Dummies secretly takes a job directing a porn film after her other moneymaking schemes don't pan out. She brings her feminist ideals to the porn set, and the experience unexpectedly awakens her slumbering sexuality, arousing the suspicions of her politically-correct husband and threatening her marriage."
Showings of Slippery Slope:
Cobble Hill Cinema
265 Court Street, Brooklyn
9:30 pm | Sunday June 3
6:00 pm | Thursday June 7

This weekend's Bushwick Open Studios Festival looks simply incredible. Taking place is "a self-organized art festival including artists opening their studios to the public, an art parade and the Cabaret ¡Art Spectacular! at Nutroaster Saturday night. To end the weekend participants are invited to unwind at a film screening and community BBQ on Sunday night. Anyone in the community is welcome to participate by presenting art work, organizing activities, or by helping to produce the event. The purpose of the festival is to create an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community by sharing artistic projects and encouraging community interaction and dialogue."
Here's a list of individual festival events including times and locations. Celebrate free culture and community at BOS 2007 this weekend!
