George Lois: The Esquire Covers @ MoMa

Looks like an awesome exhibit to check out before it leaves!
From 1962 to 1972, George Lois changed the face of magazine design with his ninety-two covers for Esquire magazine. He stripped the cover down to a graphically concise yet conceptually potent image that ventured beyond the mere illustration of a feature article. Lois exploited the communicative power of the mass-circulated front page to stimulate and provoke the public into debate, pressing Americans to confront controversial issues like racism, feminism, and the Vietnam War. Viewed as a collection, the covers serve as a visual timeline and a window onto the turbulent events of the 1960s. Initially received as jarring and prescient statements of their time, the covers have since become essential to the iconography of American culture.

Farm Sanctuary Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food a discussion with Gene Baur@ Jerome Green Hall in Columbia Law School

Farm Sanctuary is the nation's leading farmed animal protection organization. During this eye-opening presentation and book-signing with Gene Baur, you will learn why Booklist has called Gene's new book "a life-altering read."
Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food by Gene Baur, depicts the plight of the animals who are victims of industrial farming. The truth is that farm production today does not depend on the family farmer with a small herd of animals, but instead resembles a large, assembly-line factory. Farm Sanctuary is a thought-provoking examination of the ethical questions involved in the production of beef, poultry, milk, and eggs.
Special Guest David Wolfson, Esq.-author of Beyond the Law: Agribusiness and the Systemic Abuse of Animals Raised for Food or Food Production-will speak about farmed animal and the law.

We Can’t Believe, We Must Believe Panel Discussion with Stephen Duncombe, Zack Exley, Savitri Durkee, and Simon Critchley @ The Change You Want To See Gallery

Tonight at the Change You Want See Gallery there will be a panel discussion on the themes of faith and politics with guests Stephen Duncombe, Zack Exley, Savitri Durkee, and Simon Critchley.
"It has been said that the contemporary age is one of irony, where Truth and the meta-narrative have been shot through with holes. The collateral damage could be characterized as a crisis of meaning – one that is filled by the rise of fundamentalism and the creed of consumerism. We see the polarization of our population – the red state, blue state divide is decreed by pundits and pollsters to be more accurately a divide between those who believe and those who do not.
Where the Right makes universal claims, the Left takes a critical position, aiming to reveal an irrational or intolerant opponent. Faith, advertising and political spectacle are treated as mythologies to dismantle. While the dogma of fundamentalism and the Right’s fictionalizing are legitimately problematic, the implications of this reactionary focus are as well…
What are the casualties of the Left’s critiques? Is there a redemptive value to fundamentalism? Is there a way beyond this deadlock that addresses the pitfalls of dogma and those of distanced irony? What could a religion for disbelievers look like, and why could this be important?

Pop Cultures Addicts One Stop Website: getTRIO.com

Being an absolute avid reader of anything having to do with pop culture. I stumbled upon this amazing website which has everything from your television round ups and celebrity gossip to the hottest events in NYC(* which is perfect for me!). getTRIO.com is your one stop website for gossip, the latest in technology and anything you feel you need to keep up with current trends!
getTRIO.com brought to my attention two excellent movies, one newly released on DVD,called King of Kong. Which is a documentary that follows two characters as they strive to break the Guinness Book of World Records top King Kong Score. Sounds pretty entertaining!

Also a cross genre comedy/ horror flick that has kind of haunted my dreams since watching the trailer called Teeth. "It's not a straight-up teen comedy, not quite horror, and not really a drama -- though when a chaste high school student becomes the target of male violence and discovers herself to have an anatomical quirk that makes her a living example of the vagina dentata myth, things get uncomfortably funny, horrifying, and very dramatic, indeed." The film was the talk of Sundance, with its dark take on sexual power and payback. Sounds off the wall! Be sure to check out more about it on the website!
